Was that a horse swimming by?

It’s Pony Swim day!

Did you know that every year on the island of Chincoteague, Virginia, on the last Wednesday of July, thousands of people herd together to watch the annual pony swim conducted by the volunteer fire department?

Chincoteague normally has a population of about 1,500. But spectators for the annual event typically can numbered about 60,000!

What everyone wants to see is the “Saltwater Cowboys” herd the wild ponies (there are about 150 ponies involved in the swim each year) from Assateague Island (it’s a national refuge) across a narrow channel of water to Chincoteague Island where the new colts are auctioned off the following day to provide funding for the fire department.

Although I’ve never seen it, it sounds like something really fun to see. Too bad there are WAY TOO MANY other people with the same thoughts. It’s a tiny island – we’ve been there. No way would I want to fight all those people to see horses swim.

But it’s still a fun idea and something fun I bet most of my loyal readers didn’t know.

So, have a great Pony Swim day and try to take a dip in honor of the ponies. Even if you’ve only got a bath tub – it still counts.

That is so funny! What WILL people think of next to draw a crowd for a day!! I think we should dress a whole bunch of guinea pigs in pink ballerina costumes and make them run through a field of packing peanuts...and charge them $5 to get in...and have a carnival...it'll be great!! People will come from Minnesota in their huge RV's just to see it! I love it!
