Would Hank Williams Sr. approve of Biscuit World?
I know you are all looking for an update from our trip this weekend. Sorry it is so late coming, but I don't get paid to blog.
But here's a brief catch-up:
First of all, did you know that Hank Williams Sr. died in the oh-so-big town of Oak Hill, West Virginia? Well, he did and apparently it was quite the memorable occasion as the nice little restaurant we went to Friday night was floor-to-ceiling decked with Hank Williams memorabilia. Apparently, someone was wanting to open up a museum in Oak Hill, but the funding fell through and now the Mountain Laurel restaurant in Fayetteville (the next town over from Oak Hill) got all the stuff that was to be donated to the museum.
I don't know what was more odd - the memorabilia or the fact we were seriously the only people eating in the restaurant at 8:00 p.m. on a Friday night. But just so you know, the food was great. Good enough for Hank, that's for sure.
Next, Fayetteville is also home to the New River Gorge Bridge. It's the Western Hemisphere's largest steel arch bridge. Very impressive. We even got to raft under it. The nice little fact sheet at the lookout said it's tall enough that if you stacked the Washington Memorial and two Statues of Liberty on top of one another (at river level), you'd still have 20 ft. to spare of clearance. Which means it's a long ways down... which could be why it's illegal to walk across the bridge. Too many people have "disappeared" when doing so. Nice...
Speaking of nice, the little cottage we stayed at (think Bed & Breakfast, minus the Breakfast) was wonderful. Very cute with lots of pretty views all around, and - minus the farmer neighbor's donkeys - was pretty quiet and secluded. Plus, it had a hot tub and pool. Woodcrest is the name of the estate. It also has a full house and a smaller cabin to rent as well. If you're in the area, stay there.
And if you're there rafting or fishing or doing something adventuresome, go with Class VI (the outfitters). You won't be disappointed, I promise. We had a great time with them and they've got the best facilities around. Our day with them included a wonderful breakfast, lunch on the river and a scrumptious dinner at their facilities that have a great view of the river and bridge.
And last, but not least, I've now been to Biscuit World. I thought Butter World would top my list, but now I've been to Biscuit World, it's a close contest. Not kidding, the restaurant we had breakfast at Sunday morning was named Biscuit World. Overall it was okay, nothing to rant and rave about, but it was alright and kept us full until we could make a stop at the ever-so-loved Hinckley-family-trip tradition, Cracker Barrel. Yum.
More photos should be added shortly. Blogger's still not working properly. I'm about to go off on these people. Don't they know how important this is?!? People's everyday Katie-fix is not getting met and that's just WRONG. Big time Grrrr.
