Here fishy fishy fishy...
How many of you remember how Ernie (of Bert & Ernie) goes fishing?
He sits in the boat and simply yells out over the water "HERE FISHY FISHY FISHY..." And then, on cue, all the little muppet/puppet fishies jump inside the boat. No hooks, no rod & reel and no bait.
That's my kind of fishing. Although, going and watching my sweetheart catch a few is pretty nice too.
We went yesterday back down to the pier at Sandbridge after spending several hours fishing (Suntanning/sunburnning for me) out on the beach down there on Saturday. It's so nice.
What'd he catch? A whole lot of nothing, except for a few spot and an Atlantic Spadefish.
So today's oh-so-educational post is about spadefish...
Spadefishes are in the fish family Ephippidae. They are spade-shaped, laterally compressed, and very symmetrical triangular dorsal and anal fins. The eyes are often located in one of the vertical bands of coloring as a method of camouflage.
The Atlantic spadefish (Chaetodipterus faber), great for sport fishing, is an attractive black and white zebra-striped fish common just offshore in the southeastern US and Caribbean. They are favorites because they put up a fight as they are reeled in. Considered an overfished species, most of the individuals caught are small and young and are nowhere near the maximum size recorded for their species.
Since we only had the one, we gave him to another fisherman ther on the pier. So, we didn't get to taste him. But maybe another time.
And no you know about puffer fish and spadefish. That's the fun thing about fishing down at the pier. You never know what's going to come up on your line.
