What else aren't they telling us?
Okay, so I'm looking for blog material today. (Yes, that means Wikipedia.) So I'm browsing through what's happened in history today. Nothing that catches my eye... until I get clear down to 2002.
Do you know what happened four years ago today?
No? Then read this:
2002 - A near-earth asteroid estimated at 10 meters diameter explodes over the Mediterranean Sea. The resulting explosion is estimated to have a force of 26 kilotons, slightly more powerful than the Nagasaki atomic bomb.
Ummm, so why is it I don't remember this? Why is it that this is the first I've heard about this?
Granted, today is two days before my fourth wedding anniversary which means this happened two days before my wedding, so I might have been slightly occupied - but a near-earth explosion worse than an atomic bomb?!? You'd think I'd hear about that!!!
So I'm wondering, even if it was just me being occupied - how many other people remember hearing about this? Or was it even widely-spread knowledge? Does anyone remember hearing about this?
And in my opinion, which I know isn't yours or anyone else's, but I'd think this news would be something that lingers about a few days. Not just here and then gone overnight. This isn't your typical urban shooting or regional flash flooding. This is something that could really change the world (no pun intended).
Hello? NEAR-EARTH Asteroids as deadly as the atomic bomb?!? It exploded over one of the most populated bodies of water on Earth!
I know there are hundreds of thousands of asteroids out there that are flung about the galaxy. But how many with this kind of potentially deadly powers are heading for a collision course with Earth?
No, I'm not stuck in the movie Armageddon - but it does make one wonder. How frequently does this happen and what are they telling us, or not telling us, about it???
Hmmmmm...
