"I'm going to Butter World"

For those who might not know, I'm a big Frasier fan. And one of the all time best lines, in my opinion, uttered on the show came from the mouth of Roz, played by Peri Gilpin (as seen to the left, dressed for Halloween).

In the scene (not during Halloween), Frasier is leaving the sound booth and telling Roz goodbye as he's leaving for a week of vacation with Freddie, his son. Roz asks why Freddie can't come to Seattle to vacation (she doesn't want Frasier to leave and some other guy fill in for him at the radio station). Frasier informs her he's taking Freddie to Colonial Williamsburg where they will have fun by making candles and churning butter.

It's then Roz remarks in an announcers voice, "Freddie, you've just finished the first grade. What are you going to do?" To which she follows with, "I'm going to Butter World!"

In honor of my mother (since mother's day is Sunday), let me just say ladies and gents - I've been to Butter World. I've been to Colonial Williamsburg on many occasions. It's nice. (However, I have not make a single candle or churned butter while there.)

But thanks to my mother, I've been to far more places than Butter World. With my mother I've seen all sort of historic landmarks, battlegrounds, memorials, and cemeteries. I saw a great deal of this nation through family vacations and historic trips. I've been to 38 out of the 50 states.


In those 38 I've seen capitols, colleges, swamps, waterfalls, beaches, canyons, mountains and forests. I've seen Smithsonians, NASA centers, the Corvette factory and museum, the Indy Speedway, Pike's Peak, Royal Gorge, and too many other amazing sites to list.

And through it all, and my mother, I have a larger concept of our country and the world. I don't see my world in tunnel vision. I knows there's so much around us and many times it goes unseen. There's entire continents and countries I've yet to see. There's so many place I still want to go. And I know much of the drive and passion behind it, was and is my mother.

So here's to mothers - to the super women they can be. And here's to Butter Worlds unexplored - may I see may of you in the future.

And yes, that's a butter sculpture up above. It is its own little buttery world.
